What an exciting time I've had since my last post. Got home from work last night around 9:30 and sat down to post a short update, only to find that Greymatter, the software that runs this journal, had completely conked out on me. Instead of the login screen I got a string of compile errors. Eek!
Since I'm leaving in three days and posting to Greymatter is an integral part of the trip, I'm sure you can imagine why I was a little freaked out. I spent a bit of time trying to get it running again, installing another version as a test, even installing another program -- Movable Type -- all to no avail. So I posted begging for help from the Greymatter forums and moved on to other things.
Namely, getting the laptop configured for an internet connection through the cell phone. According to the Kyocera website, it ought to have been easy. But I discovered to my dismay that the data cable I had bought only came with PC drivers. The Mac drivers only come with the USB cable. There's a certain logic to that, seeing as Macs have no serial ports, only USB. The only problem is the USB cable won't be available until June.
So what are Mac users supposed to do in the meantime? Apparently that's not much of an issue to Verizon Wireless. But we mac users are accustomed to being ignored and figuring it things out on our own! It took me a while to find the drivers and settings I needed, but I finally got everything configured. The connection is a little slow but otherwise it seems to work fine.
In the meantime, some kind soul at the Greymatter forum advised me that my problem sounded like something wrong with the server. So I wrote to my hosting service, who promptly wrote back to tell me that a perl module had gotten corrupted yesterday. They fixed it and everything is fine now. Hooray for pair.com!
Georg and Rob just got back with some lunch for me. After that I'll try to do some work on my car before it rains. Will do a trial run of the web cams later today.
