Finally got a cell phone that will work for me. It's by Kyocera. I checked their website and they are compatible with Macs. They even had a PDF on the site with instructions for connecting to a Mac. And they had the data cable at the store, and I do get a signal at home. We're good to go!
We get so many "night and weekend" minutes that we're planning to use the cell phone instead of our home phone to make long distance calls. That should cut our phone bill significantly. And best of all, on parade day we'll be able to leave the connection open constantly ... no need to upload images in batches & run the cams on a delay. We'll be truly live!
I also stopped by the Apple store and picked up a card reader for the camera. It was a bit more expensive than the one at Best Buy, but I had read comments online that people were having problems using that card reader with OS X. I asked the Apple Store clerk about this one and he said he used it with his own Mac, running OS X, and didn't have any problems.
And I ordered a book from Amazon. It's called 1001 Ways to Market Your Book and while I don't expect to find 1001 useful bits of advice, even a few dozen would be worth the money. With that, the biography of Crowley, a Brian Eno memoir that I'm part-way through, and The Difference Engine which my dad is sending, I should have plenty of reading material for the trip.
The only blemish on the evening was that I forgot to call the mechanic and ask them to leave my car outside the gate. So we couldn't get the car and poor Georg had to drive me around all evening. Luckily the mechanic opens really early, so we'll be able to retrieve the car in the morning.
