tuesday after dinner

We went into downtown Atlanta to have dinner at Mary Mac's Tea Room, a restaurant Georg had heard about. They're supposed to have the best fried chicken in the country. It was good, and it seems to be an Atlanta tradition. But I have to admit, for a famous restaurant it suffered in comparison to the unassuming Gary's Bar-B-Que, which we had stumbled onto earlier today.

One neat thing about Mary Mac's is that you write your own ticket, and the waitress comes by and picks it up. They had a lot of seriously Southern food, including fried green tomatoes and "pot likker," a bowl of greens and broth with a chunk of cornbread in it. Sounds strange but it tasted really good! Also the menu actually described sweet tea as "the house wine of the South." I always thought that was the kind of thing that northerners said derisively about the south, but no southerner would actually say. Guess I was wrong!

When we got back, we checked our email and discovered our first major screw-up of the trip: we forgot to give a house key to Georg's brother Rob, who's house-sitting! D'oh! We're going to express mail a key to him in the morning. But in the meantime he'll be trapped in the house. Good thing Georg took him out grocery shopping before we left!

Speaking of which, it is such an incredible relief to have Rob staying at the house. First of all, if he weren't there I would hesitate to post on a web site about being away from home for ten days. Besides which, it's a great comfort not to have to board the dogs. They are getting old, and they just had dental surgery a couple of weeks ago. It's really nice that they can stay home where they're comfortable, with Rob looking after them, making sure Thirteen takes her arthritis pill, etc. I hope they're not too weird for him.

Tomorrow morning we'll hit the road early, and head to Baton Rouge, LA. Elizabeth Owen has kindly offered to put us up for the night. Elizabeth is a wonderful textile artist & friend of mine through the online tarot community. I'm really excited about finally getting to meet her.

So glad to hear you made it to Atlanta! Things here are good. Looking forward to the car cams in action! Drive with care, remember to watch out for the other drivers.

Hi Sarah and Georg, I'm already addicted to your travel notes. You have me wanting to go to Gary's, but not this year. I'll be checking in often. Thanks for the incredible effort to share the trip up to date by words and visuals. Be safe and enjoy.
