We're in Atlanta! I'm writing from our hotel room, which kindly offered internet access in the room. It's near the airport and seems to be geared towards business travelers. It took about 7 hours to get from Durham to Atlanta, including a generous half hour to eat lunch at Gary's Bar-B-Que, a fantastic barbecue joint near Charlotte.
We stopped there after seeing a highway billboard that said "famous barbecue." It was terrific! The kind of place where the waitress greets you with "What y'all drinking, hon?" and the sign at the counter encourages you to leave a note for the owner if your service is not fast and friendly. Georg commented that "happy pigs" on the signage are an indicator of a good barbecue place; the menu at Gary's has two dancing cartoon pigs. I had a "barbecue tray" which was a little paper tray, full of shredded pork and vinegery cole slaw, served with hush puppies of course. The barbecue was unseasoned, with two different bottles of sauce at the table.
We're off to have dinner now; I'll write more later. If anyone knows of a good place to have lunch or dinner between Atlanta and Baton Rouge, please let us know tonight! We'll be heading that way tomorrow.
