I think I've got it! We've tested the web cams from the living room: running the laptop off the battery, running two cams, uploading via cellphone, with the web page displaying the most recent photo and reloading itself once a minute. Success!
This was going to be a terribly complicated thing with applescripts on the laptop and perl on the server, to upload the images in batches and run through them in order. But since I have a gazillion weekend minutes I can leave the connection open throughout the parade, and upload each image as it's taken.
We were having some problems uploading this evening; only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the images were getting uploaded. But the problems seemed to be with the ftp account, not with the cell modem. It kept rejecting the connection because there were "already 300 users logged in." I went to my own computer and got the same error message. That's never happened to me before, so I'm going to be optimistic and assume it won't happen next Saturday.
The only thing left to test is whether I can do all this from the car, running off the cigarette lighter. I'll go out for a drive tomorrow morning and see how it goes.
This is so exciting!
