playing catch up

I've been working on getting photos online the past couple of days, which means that I haven't done any writing in the trip report. Sorry! :( Here's some links to other sites with good photos:

Houston Chronicle

Project Popemobile

RaceShop.org

Digital Dave

Venus Hair

Venus Hair had this cute photo of Chaigirl and Toby leaning out her car window. As I've been going through my own photos, I've noticed that I have almost no photos of people. Except incidental, when people happened to be standing in front of a car I wanted a picture of. I was so busy photographing cool cars, I missed all the cool people I met!

I came down with a cold as soon as we left Houston. It must have been all the excitement and stress, plus the physical strain of being out in the heat and sun all the time. As soon as it was all over and the adrenaline wore off, I immediately got sick. Let me tell you, blowing your nose with one hand and driving with the other is officially No Fun.

I went back to work today. Which was pretty weird after having been away for almost two weeks. I haven't had a vacation this long since I left college twelve years ago! Fortunately, they weren't even expecting me until next week. So they were happy enough to see me early and didn't seem to mind that I was so out of it.

I've been having an odd email exchange with another car artist. He wrote to me yesterday, mentioned that we had met at the art car ball, and invited me to caravan with him to craft fairs all around the country and sell my jewelry. As I don't make jewelry, he must have gotten me confused with someone else. It was a nice long message, very sincere, so I wrote back telling him of the mistake and wishing him luck finding the person he had actually talked to.

This morning he wrote back another lengthy message, insisting that he knew who I was and I had shown him my jewelry and he really thought my work would do well at these craft fairs. I was a little nonplussed -- I ought to know whether I sell jewelry or not -- but I did want him to find the person he really wanted. So instead of ignoring it I wrote back again, explaining again that I don't make jewelry so it couldn't have been me that he had talked to.

He wrote back this afternoon, telling me that he had looked up "jewelry" in several dictionaries and one of them specified it had to include metal. Since my beadwork didn't have any metal in it, maybe that was why I kept refusing the term be applied to my work? He described an encounter we had supposedly had after the parade, when I was spreading my beaded jewelry out on a towel on the grass and the wind kept flipping over the towel, so he helped me straighten it out.

This time he provided enough information that I could definitively say that it was not me. The only thing our group spread out on the grass after the parade was a picnic lunch! The exchange was starting to weird me out, but I tried to be nice & suggested he ask the artcarz list for help finding the person he had talked to. I guess he must have finally been convinced that it wasn't me, because I haven't heard back again.

We are totally playing mah-jongg next year! Unless, of course, I am getting married the weekend of Art Car. Which is looking very probable. Art Car v. Marriage. The debate goes on...

We are already thinking of ideas for next year. Maybe another "performance piece?"
