I've heard that the typical reaction to attending an art car event is to come home thinking, "I need more stuff on my car! right now!" Which is exactly how I've been feeling since I got back from Houston. I was so impressed by all the bead and mosaic cars -- especially Erin's -- that I've decided to add beads in all the blank spaces in between the carpet.
I thought I could use shades of blue to make sort of wave-like patterns, that would look nice. I ordered 30 dozen strands of beads in blue, acqua, silver and white from Oriental Trading Company. They really are the greatest source for large quantities of cheap plastic things. I also got two big bags of little goldfish in all different colors, and three dozen glow in the dark lizards. Thought I'd put the lizards on the ceiling inside. Maybe someday I can get a black light and fill the interior with glow in the dark stuff.
I counted the beads on a couple of strands and it works out to almost 40,000 beads. Wow! I wonder how much of the car that will cover. I heard from someone on the art car list that the metallic beads I bought tend to fade to black. Which would really suck. But I'm going to try varnishing them with Vinyl-Kote and see if that minimizes the fading.
Tomorrow morning I've asked my 5 year old friend Carina to help me start putting the beads on. She's really into crafts so I think it will be great fun to have her help me with the car. I warned her mother to make sure she wears old clothes and puts up her hair though. I don't want her to end up with her favorite outfit (or worse, her hair) covered in E-6000!
This morning I saw the painted car at Foster's again. Instead of just leaving a note I asked one of the staff about it. Turns out it was someone who worked there so I got to talk to her! Her name is Carolyn and she's really nice. I asked her to come to our triangle art car get together on the 15th, but unfortunately she works on Saturdays.
So I wrote to Deb and Toby and asked them if they wanted to have lunch at Fosters after we check out the Apple store. The new mall is fun, but the only places for lunch are expensive restaurants and the food court. Fosters would be much better for lunch, it's not that far away, and that way we could meet Carolyn and see her car. Here's hoping it works out!
