Finally I find a free moment to write up the end of Artscape! But first I want to mention that I got my packet yesterday from Charlotte Shout. It's very exciting! The packet came FedEx, wow so official. Turns out that it's not just an art car parade. It's a big Labor Day parade with floats, marching bands, all that stuff, and art cars. I hope all the art cars drive together! I'm sure we will. It wouldn't make any sense for them to spread us around. We'll have more impact as a group.
There was a letter I needed to sign and send back with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Get a load of this: they're actually paying us to go, and giving us a free hotel room too! We were going to drive down that morning and come back the same night, but why pass up a free hotel room? If we can work out something for the dogs (they've been in the kennel a lot lately so I only want to board them for one night) we'll stay in Charlotte Sunday night. Drive back after the parade on Monday night and back to work Tuesday. It's only a 3 hour drive, not too bad.
I joked to Georg that they were treating us like real artists. No, he said, if they were treating us like real artists they'd be exploiting us and stealing our work and cheating us out of royalties. Then again, I don't remember exactly what the application form said. I might have signed away the right for them to use photos of my car in marketing materials, a book or whatever. If that's the case, then woo-hoo! I'm a real artist!
Deb Allen and I are trying to arrange to get together in Charlotte. After all, we are both representing TRACK at this thing! Unfortunately she and her husband are going down early Monday morning, and we have to leave before dinner on Monday since we have to be back at work on Tuesday. Maybe we'll have some time to hang out in the afternoon during the festival. It seems like at these events, once you're through driving the parade they show you where to park and then you're pretty much stuck in the middle of some outdoor festival. Of course they want you to stick around a while so that people can check out your car. Though I've never heard of one specifying how long you have to stay. Georg and I usually cut out early just because we're hot and tired and ready to go home. Maybe if we planned better, brought some refreshments and a couple of camp chairs, we could hang out in Charlotte.
Speaking of which, time to finish my Artscape trip report! I think I'll start a new post for that.
