fiery yellow

The coolest ad on TV right now: The new Volkswagen Phaeton spot. Because it features "Fiery Yellow" by Stereolab (the last track on Mars Audiac Quintet). An ad which prompts me to fill the CD changer with Stereolab albums is a good ad indeed.

as vw/beetle aficianado, i'm a little upset that they use the white background style of ad for the phaeton. traditionally, that style was used for aircooled vw's, and was resurrected only for the new beetle's initial ad campaign (which also featured a stereolab song).

the phaeton, for those who don't know, is causing quite a ruckus in the vw world, because it costs around $80k. a lot of folks have a hard time swallowing a $20k beetle, since it's such a departure from the beetle's roots as the "people's car"; an $80k vw is downright offensive. even *i* find it offensive, and i don't have too hard a time with the separation between new and old beetle.

sorry, hope i am not blogjacking you too horribly here; guess it's been on my mind and i didn't realize it until i read your post.

$80k? really? Not to sound snarky but, in the ads it really doesn't look that great. I mean, it's just a car. Does it have a gold plated toilet in the back or something?

Maybe they've decided that a white background and Stereolab is the ad style of choice for any new model that they hope will make them a lot of money.

yep. $80k. i think there are less expensive models available but nothing below $60k.

it's bigger than it probably looks; i saw one at the mall the other day.

i don't think they hoped the beetle would make them money. in fact, it was a secret project by audi designers, they somehow got the concept 1 into an auto show, and the vw marketing folks had to backpedal at the auto show when there was public outcry for the vehicle. they went to the show proclaiming that it was just a concept and would never be produced.

it did save the marque in america, but has never been a real money maker for them.
