unnatural intrusion security

So, it snowed last night. All the local TV stations ran closing announcements, as they tend to do when it snows. Channel 14 had the clever idea of posting a form on their website that allowed people to submit announcements. They also had the less clever idea of airing the submissions without authentication or human review, with amusing results. There are a bunch of screen shots here. Damn, I wish I'd known about this while it was happening.

Wonderful! This reminds me (and I'd half forgotten I have to say) of the web design work we did for the police force in the UK many years ago. They had had the touching idea of starting a community website for people to chat and upload announcements to, but it was the early days of the web and no-one had considered having it moderated. When we say the results (prior to our involvement) they were hysterical of course - the spoof ads for crack cocaine dealers were only the tip of the iceberg. Shame really, as the idea was genuinely well meant.

Whoops - sorry, I meant when we "saw" the results. In fact we didn't "say" anything right away - what could you say? We were too busy trying not to giggle...
