Had a hilarious exchange at Southern Season a few days ago. I stopped there to pick up a couple of things. The guy at the cash register rang up the first thing and commented:
"Horseradish cheddar spread, that sounds good!" I made some noncommittal reply to the effect that yes, it did sound good. Then he got to my next item and exclaimed:
"Chopped liver! WOW! Are these for YOU?"
I didn't really know how to respond to that. I think I said, "well not all at once, but yeah, they're for me." The guy went on and on about how great chopped liver is, and had I tried fried chicken liver (I hadn't) which is just as good. He seemed so happy about the conversation. I wonder if he'd never before met a chick who would eat stuff like horseradish and chopped liver? I'll eat almost anything, as long as it's good. (And not primarily made of eggs.)
(For the record, the horseradish cheddar spread is too sharp to eat on crackers, which is how I normally have cheese spreads. But it's really good in place of mustard in a grilled cheese sandwich. Cooking seems to temper the sharpness, and it melts all nice and gooey. The chopped liver was as good as always. Didn't try it in a grilled cheese sandwich.)

What a cute little foodie! So do you like livermush too? (one of the foods Gina Won't Eat.)
Licroise? Olives? Pickles? Anchovies?
Livermush: never had it, but I've eaten scrapple so I'd probably be willing to try it.
I don't like the flavor of anise, so I don't eat black licorice (but I get past that one on the "as long as it's good" clause, because licorice tastes terrible :). Olives, pickles and anchovies are things that I generally wouldn't sit down and eat a bowl of, but I enjoy them quite a lot as ingredients. The Barbecue Joint has the most amazing pickles anywhere. And I've got a recipe for something with chopped anchovies in it that's really good. Wish I could remember what that recipe was though.
i can't get past "mustard on a grilled cheese sandwich". ew! ;-) my grilled cheese always just has bread & cheese. period.
really? I love to put stuff in grilled cheese sandwiches. My favorite right now is grilled cheese and pastrami with some of that horseradish cheese spread. Grilled cheese and turkey with mustard and tomato is also very good. You have to be careful about the tomato though, it can make the sandwich soggy.
I forgot, pepper jelly is also fantastic in a grilled cheese :)
i used to like to put diced peppers and/or minced green onion on grilled cheese; mustard is good too. i especially like many sharp flavors, like a very sharp cheddar, good grainy mustard, and minced green onion. i also like good, robust bread but that's not an option at the moment :)
there's an orkut community devoted to grilled cheese sandwiches that i'm on. there's a whole "ketchup vs. no ketchup" debate going on right now. if i'm having the traditional diner GC-- white bread, american cheese-- ketchup is a must (especially since i'm probably also having fries and will therefore have ketchup on my plate anyway).
Have you tried Rudi's low carb bread from Whole Foods? The texture is astonishingly like real bread. The best part is, Rudi's has some kind of proprietary mix they use, and they're a vendor of Whole Foods, and they're talking about selling the mix to Georg's bakehouse to make their own low carb specialty breads! yay!!! He's going to bring a boboli crust home tonight or tomorrow for us to "product test."
