Another season of America's Next Top Model has come and gone. I must say, of the contestants who were left, Naima was the one I liked best. I really liked Brittany, she took great photos, and I didn't understand why they ejected her. But once they did Naima was the best one left in my opinion. She's not really Cover Girl beautiful, but she has an interesting, striking face.
I thought that Keenyah had the best career potential, but her weight was a serious problem which she seemed unwilling to deal with. (it makes me cringe to say that, as Keenyah is still quite thin by the standards of a real person. If I stood next to her there's no question she'd be much thinner than I am. But, I'm not the one trying to become a model.) As Shayne pointed out last night, Keenyah would have done really poorly in the runway contest: in one of those bathing suits with the little straps all over the body, even the slightest softness ends up looking like bulges and rolls. On the other hand, her curvier body looked great in the retro photo shoot the week before.
I feel a little sad having no Survivor and no ANTM to look forward to next week. So is anyone interested in getting together to watch the Season 1 ANTM DVDs? There's some great stuff in there: atheist Elise vs. bible-thumper Robin, the group bikini wax, Kimora Lee Simmons, Janice screaming at Kesse that she looks like an amputee who has a penis, and best of all, not much Mr. Jay! I think there are 9 episodes, so we could watch 3 at a time for 3 weeks. That would make a comfortable evening or weekend afternoon. We could start the first week in June. Let me know if you're interested!
I'm totally interested - in fact just last night I was saying that I wanted to revisit season 1, since I didn't really pay much attention to it. And now that I read Elyse's journal, I want to see her in action again.
i think i'd be willing to give the show another shot-- watching with avid fans would probably be fun.
yay! The first season was the best so far, I think.
why is it that the first seasons of things are always the best? there should be a cable channel devoted to reruns of nothing but first seasons.
But on a lot of shows the second season is the best: the show is finding its voice & maybe a little awkward at times the first season, & really hits it stride in the second. I think Buffy was like that. Actually the second and third were equally good in my mind.
i hadn't thought about another other contestants in that final runway competition... that bathing suit naima was wearing wouldn't have looked good on *anyone* else, i don't think. yow.
i'm totally psyched about seeing season 1... especially after hearing you say "amputee with a p*nis". :-)
there's a whole new crop of reality crap this summer... "rock star" (mark burnett produced show to find a new lead singer of INXS), "chaotic" with britney & kevin, and doesn't martha stewart's "apprentice"-like show start this summer, too?
i don't think i'll be watching any of those, but i WILL be tivoing "rob and amber get married". :-)
I've never gotten into other reality shows besides Survivor and ANTM. I hear The Amazing Race is great, but I've never seen a single episode. And I absolutely will not watch the Britney and Kevin show! Ugh.
I've heard that the Britney and Kevin show is boring, so there goes my idea for an ANTM replacement. Boo.
i watched one episode of the catherine oxenburg reality show, "i married a princess". it wasn't all that compelling.
I saw the Catherine Oxenburg show too - and it was compelling enough to keep me up late one night, but not compelling enough to care about seeing it ever again.
i watched "the amazing race" this season (for rob and amber, natch) and really enjoyed it. i'll watch again next season.
did you see this hilarous blurb on salon about this cycle of ANTM? the writer really thinks tyra is letting the show fail:
"So here's my tough-love "talk to me" moment for Tyra Banks: You take some responsibility for yourself, and fix it! Be quiet, Tyra! Stop it! I have never in my life yelled at a supermodel like this! I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you! How dare you! You had the best reality show on television, and you screwed it up! Learn something from this! Do you hear me? This is no joke! This time next year, I'd better be watching beautiful, neurotic misfits bungee-jumping into a Piranha-filled river ..."

I saw that thing in Salon, it cracked me up. The TWOP recapper also did some hilarious parodies of Tyra's outburst.
Speaking of weight issues in modeling, Elyse Sewell just posted on her LJ that she was fired from a job in Chile for being too thin. Six months after being reprimanded by her agency in Tokyo for being too fat. I guess there is no correct size. At least not if you try to please beauty standards all over the world.
(I should add that Elyse has been posting photos in her LJ all along and I haven't noticed any size fluctuation between "too fat for Tokyo" and "too skinny for Santiago.")
