the ladykillers

June 9 movie: The Ladykillers. This may be Alec Guinness' most famous Ealing movie (certainly since the remake), but I think it's also my least favorite. Maybe it's those creepy teeth. Or maybe just because it's meaner than the others. Then again, is The Ladykillers really more mean-spirited than Kind Hearts and Coronets? Hard to say. Oh well, I think All at Sea is still my favorite. Or maybe The Man in the White Suit.

Did you notice Peter Sellers in "The Ladykillers". I think this was his first movie, and he really didn't have much of part. He went on to make many great movies in the U.K. before he moved to Hollywood and made over the top junk directed by Blake Edwards. Whatever did Julie Andrews see in this guy! Incidently, I discovered a few days ago that the BBC radio Goon shows with Peter Sellars, to which I was addicted in the 50s, are available from E-Bay on 2 MP3-CDs for only $5 each, including S/H. I ordered the first one (85 half hour shows) and am hoping that my DVD player will play it. If not, I suppose I will have to buy yet another Diskman!
