serenity

October 11 movie: Serenity. This was fantastic. I was a fan, though not an obsessive fan, and it really lived up to my memory of the series. Nice to see that Whedon's sense of humor and timing translates well to movies. I wonder how the movie would play to someone who had never seen Firefly. I hope it has a wider audience than just viewers of the show. I'd like to see Serenity make a big success and Whedon get more work.

Now, to rent the Firefly DVDs! I haven't watched the series since it originally aired. I remember I missed a couple of episodes, then I saw the one in the big hospital, thought to myself "wow, this show is awesome! I'll watch every single episode from now on!" and it was immediately cancelled. That was the last one they ever aired. Timing is everything.

I feel like I pop up just to nitpick. "Ariel"--the episode in the hospital on one of the core worlds--was not the last one broadcast. There were at least three more after that. However, there was a three-week gap between "Ariel" and the next one shown, so it would be easy to have missed it.

The last episode shown was the two-part "Serenity", which of course was originally intended to be the series intro. Fox screwed Firefly in so many ways it's not even funny.

though I haven't watched the series again, I did see the pilot on DVD, and at the time I thought it was a good decision to show The Train Job first instead. The pilot was draggy and exposition-heavy in a very un-Whedon way. The Train Job got me excited about the series, which the pilot would not have. Not that the network didn't f*** with the show, but that one thing was kind of an improvement in my mind.

as for the last episode, I *think* the one in the hospital was the last one I saw -- I definitely remember thinking "this show is awesome, I'm going to commit to watching" and then checking the TV listings in vain for weeks. That would suck if they did eventually air more episodes but I just gave up too soon.
