girl shy

November 23 movie: Girl Shy. I'm not a huge fan of Harold Lloyd, and I'm particularly not fond of stuttering played for laughs, although it was less objectionable because you couldn't actually hear Lloyd stutter. Kind of interesting also, to see such a verbal joke in a silent movie. It may have been a coincidence but the ending of The Graduate seemed to draw a lot from this movie.

As soon as I can, I'm getting the Lloyd DVD set. I have a handful of his movies, and can't get enough of 'em. One of the high points of cinema for me was seeing Safety Last at the Naro in Norfolk with Chris Kypros's genius live piano playing. I saw him for the last time just before we moved up here to Massachusetts. He plays a tapestry of appropriate music, weaving in pop culture strands from time to time -- like when Buster Keaton thinks the ship he's on is haunted, and Kypros throws in the "Etrange" theme from "The Twilight Zone."
