January 20 movie: My Neighbor Totoro. Another brilliant movie from Miyizaki. He has such a strong understanding of how kids behave and think and different ages. A lot of times kids in movies act like tiny 40-year olds. But the girls in Totoro truly behave and react like the ages they're supposed to be. Also, the cat bus is the coolest thing in the world.

I know you and your readers are hip to Miyizaki from way back, but this was the first one I saw. Hooray! We love Totoro! We love Nekobasu! This was easily the most delightful film I've seen in ages.
Have you ever seen Lilo and Stitch? Now that is a wacky movie, a whole lot weirder than one would expect from Disney. Anyway after seeing Totoro one can see how much Stitch was ripped off from that character, at least in the drawing. It doesn't compare to Totoro, and in fact the story has some very serious weaknesses, but is still more than one would expect.
Hey Sean! Anytime you and Pam want to watch more Miyazaki, we'd love to have you over. We have Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service on DVD.
I recorded Totoro and watched it a couple of weeks ago (again) too. So beautiful, so wonderful, and oh, the cat bus. I am thrilled to learn that a new DVD with the Japanese-language version will be released in March. I had heard the 2002 Fox release was not very good.
