If you've never watched daytime dramas, you may not know that time is very flexible on a soap. One day on the show almost always takes more than a day of real time. During a big event (like a wedding or kidnapping, or both) a single day of show time can easily take two weeks. To deal with this, the shows tend to be vague about dates. They never say what day it is except for major holidays, and sometimes not even then.
For my own amusement, in 2006 I kept track of the passage of time on my favorite soap, One Life to Live. At times it was hard to tell when a day had passed. I looked for clues like costume changes and the amount of light in exterior windows. Sometimes food was a good clue. Or to be more accurate, drink: if people were hanging out in a bar drinking and then in the next episode, they were in the diner drinking coffee, that probably meant it was the next day.
The best counter-example was a continuous conversation: in other words, if an episode ended during a conversation, and when the next episode began, the same conversation was still happening, then a day had not passed. Except one time, that didn't work! There was an ongoing conversation, but all the other signs pointed to a new day. Eventually I decided that they must have stayed up all night and continued talking into the morning.
By my reckoning, 2006 comprised 49 days on One Life to Live. The typical day lasted just over a week of calendar time. Right at the end there was a run of very short days, with only 6 episodes covering Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, and New Year's Eve. I guess they went through them so fast because they didn't want Christmas and New Year's Eve to happen on the same day. Soaps aren't always so fastidious about holidays: I have heard of one legendary season on, I think it was Guiding Light, in which Thanksgiving and Christmas happened on the same day. One Life didn't even have Thanksgiving this year, which bummed me out immensely. They didn't have a Fourth of July either. Well, there was bunting visible in the background in a few scenes, but no one ever mentioned the holiday.
These were the identified days in 2006: New Year's Eve 2005 (day 1), Valentine's Day (day 6), May 26 (Todd's execution, day 19), Munoz-Rivera Day (I have no idea what this is, but there's a Puerto Rican family on the show so I guess a Puerto Rican holiday -- day 24), September 11 (day 31), Halloween (day 38), Christmas Eve (day 46), Christmas Day (day 47), New Year's Eve 2006 (day 49).
It wasn't enough for me to simply record the dates, oh no. I had to write down very short recaps of what people were doing all year. I tried to only record actual events, not just people saying the same things over and over again. Otherwise the recap would have been about 10 times longer and would have included "Antonio acts like a smug asshole," "Spencer acts like a smug asshole," "Natalie rolls her eyes and whines," and "Evangeline acts like a smug asshole," every single day.
Because most people are probably not interested, I'm putting the details behind a cut. I don't know if I'm going to keep doing this next year. It did make the show more interesting, but it meant I had to pay more attention than I normally would. Todd and Blair mack. Starr wears the lion mascot costume to Cole's football game. Marcie and Michael have sex. Jessica and Antonio have sex. Brennan/Bree stays with Nash. Starr and Cole go to a party. Cris attacks Vincent. Cole has roid rage, fights with his friend Gabe, trashes a room at the party, attacks Starr, and is arrested.
- 11/16-11/28 First day of Spencer's trial. Natalie tries to dig up "John's" grave. Kevin moves to London. Jessica and Antonio go on their honeymoon in San Juan. Starr is questioned by the police. Cole is Marty Saybrook's son. Rex figures out that Tommy is Todd Jr. David testifies. David leaves the show. (waah!) Vicki and Natalie visit "Hugh" in the hospital. Blair testifies. Blair collapses on the stand. Spencer pulls his lawyer's thumb. Todd pulls Starr out of school. John has a new haircut in Natalie's dream. Todd fires Rex. Blair collapses at the penthouse. Jessica and Antonio have sex. Nash says goodbye to Tess, finally. "Hugh" is John.
- 11/29-11/30 Blair testifies again. Prosecution rests. John wakes up. Cris and Evangeline play golf.
- 12/1-12/5 Spencer testifies. Spencer goes crazy and attacks his lawyer. Jessica and Antonio come home from their honeymoon. Marty Saybrook testifies. Blair has a doctor's appointment. Blair pushes Marty. Defense rests and closing arguments in Spencer's trial. Starr babysits for Tommy.
- 12/6-12/13 Marty spills her coffee on Evangeline. Evangeline and Cris visit John in the hospital. Jack is a recast who has bad hair and loves Todd again. Spencer bashes his head against the wall and fingerpaints with the blood. Marty testifies. Two guys Tess slept with kidnap Jessica. Spencer is declared unfit and gets a mistrial. On the way to Wingdale sanitarium Todd ambushes the van and kidnaps Spencer. Rex steals baby Tommy's medical records. Blair is pregnant. Antonio and Nash rescue Jessica. Todd does Chinese water torture on Spencer. Zane comes home from the hospital and Kelly and Zane move to London. Blair has a DNA test on her embryo. Jessica brings a Christmas tree to Nash's house.
- 12/14-12/20 Jessica fixes up Layla and Nash on a blind date. Dorian secretly invests in Adriana's company. Todd is the father of Blair's baby. Spencer gets free and fights with Todd. Todd pushes Blair and Spencer off the roof. Blair and Spencer go to the hospital. Bo arrests Todd. Michael operates on Spencer. Vincent's warehouse burns down with Mikey from Soap Star inside. Guess he's off the show. Cris paints with his bad hand.
- 12/21 Christmas Eve. Beth Ann from Soap Star is an LPD cop. Blair has a miscarriage. Tree lighting in Angel Square. Marcie and Evangeline sing carols to raise money for charity.
- 12/22 Christmas Day. Adriana throws away Dorian's money, then forgives her. John stands up. Cris and Evangeline have sex. Clint and Vicki kiss.
- 12/26-12/27 Jessica smashes Cris' paintings. Blair wakes up. Adriana and Rex have sex, twice. John is transferred to Llanview Hospital. Marty interviews John anonymously.
- 12/28-12/29 New Year's Eve. Claudia gets drunk. John tries to strangle Spencer. Everyone goes to a party at Capricorn. Adriana and Layla launch their lingerie line.

you didn't read that whole thing did you? All in one go like that, it sounds kind of crazy. But when it takes a whole year for it all to happen ... it's still pretty crazy :)
