January 1 movie: The Falcon's Brother. I was looking forward to seeing one of the George Sanders Falcon series, but it turns out this was a transitional movie: Sanders is in the first few minutes, and then the Falcon's brother (played by Tom Conway, Sanders' real life brother) takes over as the new Falcon. Still, it was basically what I expected & wanted: a fun, funny mystery with a suave hero. Not just suave, rico suave! Actually the Falcon wasn't all that rico. Mainly just suave.

The Falcon Takes Over is worth seeing -- it's based on a Philip Marlowe novel. Farewell, My Lovely, I believe. (There's a better version of that with Robert Mitchum -- one of the best Chandler adaptations, in fact.)
TCM is showing The Gay Falcon later this week.
Also, according to the TCM website Dick Powell did that story too. His version was called Murder, My Sweet. Alas, they don't have the Mitchum version on their schedule as of now. I wish they would add a feature to their website so it would email you when a particular movie is scheduled to air. That would be awesome. I try to check the TCM listings every week but sometimes I get busy and forget.
Dick Powell wasn't bad, but he wasn't great. Lux Radio Theater has "Murder, My Sweet," and it might even have Powell in it -- I listened to it a couple of times, and still don't remember! But of course, the radio version won't have Powell playing hopscotch on the black and white tiles in the Grayle house.
I totally missed that Ward Bond played Moose Malloy in the Sanders version. I thought he was Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom.
