March 12 movie: The Odd Couple. Hard to believe I had never seen this movie before. I remember the TV series of course, from when I was a kid. Actually, all I clearly remember is Jack Klugman dropping a cigar butt on the ground and Tony Randall picking it up with his umbrella. I must say, Klugman and Randall were perfect to replace Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.
Anyway the movie is terrific. I think my favorite gag is "You leave little notes on my pillow! I've told you a hundred times I can't stand little notes! 'We're all out of corn flakes. FU.' It took me three hours to figure out 'FU' meant Felix Unger!"
"Smeh!" "Smeh!"
Hi Sarah, Do you remember meeting Tony Randall when you were a student at The Elementary Workshop? He was performing in a play at The Playhouse and a young girl who was in the play attended the Workshop during their stay in Wilmington.
Now that you mention it, I do remember that! Rather than talking to the entire school, assembly-fashion, he went to each class. In our class he was trying to explain something about television and he asked my friend Jessica to stand up and do a commercial for money, in other words explain to everyone in thirty seconds why they should want money.
Mark Evanier says that Neil Simon says that the "it took me three hours" line gets more laughs than any other thing he has ever written. It's definitely a keeper.
It's such a funny line, it deserves a big laugh! I thought it was so funny I paused the movie and went and told Georg about it.
ps: Phil, "smeh! smeh!" is awfully funny too. The whole movie is funny!
