March 10 movie: Futurama: Bender's Big Score. This was loads of fun. It was direct to DVD, which explains why I never heard about it in theaters. I felt at times that the series lost the funny & got too serious. For instance the episode about Fry's dog, that made me so sad that it was genuinely hard to watch. This time I thought they did a good job of balancing the pathos and the jokes. The jabs at Fox in the beginning were particularly funny. "But what does this mean to our many fans?"

Agreed. Lotsa fun. Altho I thought that it dragged in the middle a bit and it seemed like they were trying to cram every single favorite bit and reference in there (santabot: check; hypnotoad: check; al gore: check). Also, I thought the "A" plot with the scammers was actually pretty weak. They were annoying heavies and, for being the title character, Bender was almost underused. However the "B" plot, with Lars, was the bittersweet-tending-to-heartbreaking side of the show done at the level of their best stuff (the space bees episode or the move-the-stars episode)
Hopefully, they'll settle down in future dvds and not try to cram an entire series worth of bits and cameos into one movie.
I liked the Al Gore appearance but yeah, I could have done without Santabot. I thought this basically felt like a long episode and the Simpsons movie did a better job of translating to the big screen. Which is only fair considering the Futurama movie was never on the big screen.
Absolutely. The Al Gore bit was one of the high points of the movie
The Futurama DVD-movies (there will be at least four) are designed to be broken into separate episodes (I think four per movie) so that they can be shown on Adult Swim like regular episodes. I don't know how much that affects the pacing.
Wow, that makes so much sense. I didn't feel like the pacing was bad because of that, but I think if I had known it at the time it would have been glaring.
