April 17 movie: Blazing Saddles. I was disappointed and surprised by the lack of funny in this movie. I saw it decades ago and thought it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. This time it seemed ... mildly funny. At times. The Count Basie cameo was really cool though.

I've never thought that Blazing Saddles as a whole was as funny as Young Frankenstein or The Producers. However, the scene of Black Bart first riding into town is one of the funniest things ever filmed.
It probably was a lot funnier when Westerns were still a going concern--a long appreciation of Blazing Saddles that I read recently but of course can't find now--pointing out that the campfire scene is not inherently funny, but instead is exploring one of the unstated facts of life in the West. If you have a lot of men traveling together eating nothing but canned beans and a little dried meat, they're going to be really unpleasant to be around.
