diabolique

August 22 movie: Diabolique. My dad and I watched this together. (I mean the original by Clouzot, not the remake. Of course!) Neither of us had seen it in a long time, and we were both struck all over again by how good it is. The tension builds steadily, with just enough funny moments, and the climactic scene is one of the scariest things I've seen in a movie. If you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?

They filmed the remake just up the block from my house (which is the only reason I've seen it). The remake was so bad it made me never want to see the original, but now maybe I'll give it a shot . . .

You really should! The ending is quite different in the original. Well, the basic idea is still there but the way it plays out is totally different. You probably won't find the climactic scene as scary as I did because the first time around I had *no idea* what was happening. Though it was still extremely effective the second time, even though I knew.

It's a shame the remake stunk so bad because on paper, the cast of the remake seemed like good choices. At least they looked the parts.

I was trying to refresh my memory about the stupidity of the remake's ending and found a review with this hilarious summary:

Should You Watch It? If you find trashy bitchiness amusing or will watch anything with suspense. It could be worse.

OK, that review is awesome.
