August 7, 2004: final photography class

This isn't high art but I'm pleased with it. If I do say so myself, it looks just as good as the many corporate portraits I've seen on graphic design projects over the years. And people get paid to do those portraits! We used 2 strobes: one in front, reflected off an umbrella, and one in back, partially covered. There are a couple of little problems: first, the backlighting is too strong and probably a bit too far forward. It's making a shiny spot on his forehead. We were experimenting with different filters on that light. In other photos the backlighting is softer, but I hadn't metered those others correctly, they turned out a bit dark, so this one is overall better. Second, that shadow on the left side of his body. It came from the little flash on my camera, which I had to use to trigger the flash on the two strobe lights. If I had a "safe sync" cable, I could control the strobes without needing to use my own flash. Or if I had one of those big flash units, I could have pointed it away from Arthur. But I didn't have either, all I had was the little pop-up flash that has to point right at the subject. Posted by: Sarah at August 7, 2004 3:45 PMAdd a comment
